Dr. med. dent. Antonia Lokin Ivankić

Dental medicine and aesthetic medicine

During her studies, a doctor of dental medicine gains thorough knowledge of the anatomy of the head and neck, with particular emphasis on the structures of the face — muscles, nerves, blood vessels and soft tissues. This knowledge, together with clinical experience and daily work in the orofacial region, is an important foundation for understanding the individual features of a face and planning aesthetic treatments.

Dr. med. dent. Antonia Lokin Ivankić has built on her formal education by completing training in botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid fillers at the AMSTA Academy. Her approach to aesthetic treatments rests on combining the knowledge gained through her dental medicine studies with additional, targeted professional training.

Aesthetic treatments are not only a matter of appearance. They require knowledge of anatomy, an assessment of whether a treatment is appropriate, and an understanding of possible risks and complications. That is why professional qualifications and an individual approach matter when choosing the person you entrust with your face.

Aesthetic medicine as medicine, not cosmetics

Facial aesthetic treatments — botulinum toxin, hyaluronic acid fillers and microneedling — are medical procedures. Every treatment is preceded by a medical history and assessment, because whether a treatment is safe and makes sense depends on your health, medication and facial anatomy.

Our aim is a result that is not noticed as "a treatment", but as a more rested, fresher look. We work gradually and in small amounts, respecting facial proportions and your natural expressions. Sometimes our advice is not to treat, or to do less.

When to see us

When to see us

An aesthetic consultation may help if:

  • expression lines bother you, for example between the brows or on the forehead
  • you clench or grind your teeth (bruxism)
  • you would like more volume, definition or symmetry in your lips
  • your face has lost volume with age — cheekbones, cheeks, jawline
  • you would like to improve skin texture, acne scars or enlarged pores
  • you are unsure which treatment suits you, or whether you need one at all

Diagnostics and approach

An assessment before every treatment

The first consultation is for talking and assessment. We want to know what bothers you, your health, which medication you take and whether you have had aesthetic treatments before. We assess your face at rest and in motion, its proportions and skin quality.

Based on this we suggest a plan — or advise against treatment. We explain what each treatment can achieve, when the effect shows, how long it lasts and what temporary reactions are possible. Treatment is done only once you have all the information and are sure of your decision.

Medical history

Health, medication, allergies and previous treatments — before every procedure.

Subtlety as a rule

Gradual, small amounts, with a review.

An honest recommendation

Sometimes the best advice is not to treat.

Which treatment for what?

The three treatments work in entirely different ways and often complement each other.

Steps

What does a treatment involve?

  1. Consultation

A conversation about your wishes and expectations.

  2. History and assessment

Health, medication, previous treatments; your face at rest and in motion.

  3. Plan

The proposed treatment, dose or amount, with the expected effect and duration.

  4. Treatment

Carried out at the clinic, with skin preparation and disinfection.

  5. Aftercare

What to avoid in the first hours and days after treatment.

  6. Review

Assessing the result and, if needed, a small adjustment.

Contraindications and caution

Aesthetic treatments are not suitable in every situation. Treatment is generally not given, is postponed, or needs extra caution with:

  • pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • active infection, inflammation or cold sores at the treatment site
  • known hypersensitivity to the product’s ingredients
  • disorders of neuromuscular transmission (for botulinum toxin)
  • anticoagulant or antiplatelet therapy — please be sure to tell us, and do not stop taking it on your own
  • unrealistic expectations of the treatment

Detailed contraindications for each treatment are described on the treatment pages. If you are unsure whether something applies to you, tell us at the consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Which botulinum toxin do you use?

We use Bocouture. Its active substance is incobotulinumtoxinA. The dose is expressed in international units (IU).

What is the difference between botulinum toxin and fillers?

Botulinum toxin relaxes a muscle and softens expression lines. A filler restores volume and shapes contours. They work differently and often complement each other.

Will I look natural?

That is our main goal. We work gradually, in small amounts, assessing facial proportions and reviewing the result after treatment.

Can filler be removed?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with the enzyme hyaluronidase, which is available at our clinic.

What is SkinPen microneedling?

Microneedling uses controlled micro-punctures to stimulate the skin’s natural renewal. It is used for acne scars, enlarged pores, fine lines and uneven skin texture. Results build gradually, which is why a package of four treatments is available. More on the SkinPen microneedling page.

Why are aesthetic treatments done by a doctor of dental medicine?

Dental medicine requires detailed knowledge of the anatomy of the head and neck, especially the muscles, nerves, blood vessels and soft tissues of the face. A doctor of dental medicine applies this knowledge in everyday clinical work, working precisely in a sensitive area of the face and understanding how its function relates to its appearance. This professional foundation is also important when planning aesthetic treatments.

Dr. med. dent. Antonia Lokin Ivankić has built on her knowledge with specific training in aesthetic medicine, completing the basic and advanced modules in botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid fillers at the AMSTA Academy. Her professional background therefore combines formal education in dental medicine, clinical experience and additional training focused on these very treatments.

Using botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid fillers requires more than knowing the injection technique. It is important to understand the anatomy and individual features of the face, take the medical history into account, recognise contraindications, and know the possible complications and how to manage them if they occur. Equally important is a professional judgement of when a treatment is appropriate and when it should be postponed or not recommended.

For the patient, this means that the decision about treatment should rest on a professional assessment, a clear explanation of the options and limitations, and realistic expectations — with care for health, facial proportions and preserving a natural look.

Who should not have aesthetic treatments?

Treatments are generally not given during pregnancy and breastfeeding, with active infection at the treatment site or hypersensitivity to the product, and botulinum toxin is not given with disorders of neuromuscular transmission. That is why we take a medical history before every treatment.

Considering an aesthetic treatment?

At the consultation we assess your face, take your medical history and tell you openly what a treatment can and cannot achieve.
